Four Tet is not one to suffer greatly from gear acquisition syndrome – his first releases contained audio recorded on a very rudimentary desk microphone, of a kind more commonly used for Skype calls.
However, his current live setup is not exactly ‘in the box’, despite being based around a laptop running Ableton Live. With the audio stems loaded in Ableton, a lot of the actual ‘live’ work is done through some choice hardware, which loops and glitches the audio input to create an alternate reality for some of Hebden’s tracks.
The additional processing here is not exactly cutting edge – his creative use of CoolEdit (which has been deprecated for some time now, and is no longer available) along with the trusty BOSS Dr.Sample SP-303 show that you can get great results from old (and inexpensive) gear…
