Behold The Singing Robot Vocaloid

Yes indeed folks, the robots have already learned to play guitar and dance, and now they’re ready to sing as well. At this rate, the whole DRM-to-protect-the-artists kerfluffle will soon be a moot point, as we can just get a bunch of mechanoids up on stage to entertain us…

I previously covered ZMP’s dancing robot and the guitar hero robot of Rafael Mizrahi and Tal Chalozin, but now you can also generate robotic vocals using the latest generation of synthesiser software from Vocaloid. This is a Japanese innovation (of course) and can ‘sing’ in either Japanese or English. Basically, you type in the lyrics and the notes and set the program in motion. Details such as vibrato, tremolo and inflection can be pre-programmed using a GUI, and the end result is very interesting, if a little unsettling…
