Sounds Of The Solar System

In space, no one can hear you sing… unless of course you are a planetary body whose electromagnetic voices have been captured by passing NASA space probes…

The Sounds Of Saturn

These recordings are electromagnetic radio signals that have been pitched down (and time compressed) into audio signals that the human auditory system can detect. First up we have Saturn, with recordings taken by Cassini…

The Sounds Of Neptune

Next up we have Neptune, brought to us by Voyager:

The Sounds Of Jupiter

The big daddy of planetary electromagnetic orchestral work, Jupiter’s voice has been explained thus:

“Jupiter’s magnetic field is four thousand times stronger than Earth’s, and is tipped by 11° degrees of axis spin. This causes the magnetic field to wobble, which has a profound effect on trapped electronically charged particles. This plasma of charged particles is accelerated beyond the magnetosphere of Jupiter to speeds of tens of thousands of kilometres per second. It is these magnetic particle vibrations which generate some of the sound you hear on this recording.”
