I have used system specifications from January 2008 to illustrate configuration ‘sweet spots’ on various laptop components, such as processor, memory, graphics card and hard drive. Although the actual capabilities of components will always be increasing, the principles used in ‘sweet spot’ shopping remain the same.

So, don’t take the numbers here as an absolute recommendation – rather, what you need to do is find the point in the product line where you get the most ‘bang for your buck’, just before the rule of diminishing returns kicks in…
