It’s easy to forget that the iPhone is actually a phone; many people seem to want one for a plethora of other reasons. For musicians, there are a whole host of music making apps for the iPhone which make it a must-have gadget – well, if you insist on being able to throw a few grooves together while standing in the checkout queue at Tesco.

Of course, this list of apps keeps growing, and the quality of apps available likewise increases apace with the extra processing power within the device itself.

If you want to buy an iPhone 4 in Ireland on Friday, you’ll be instantly reminded of its fundamental ‘phoneness’ when presented with your contract options. If you actually just want the iPhone for music production, you’re going to be hit with a lot of collateral costs covering talk, text and data bundles (that you may or may not be inclined to utilise)…

If you want a SIM-free handset, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. The cheapest monthly contract available at launch seems to be €35 from Vodafone – o2 and 3 both start at £40 (all figures based on an 18-month contract). If these plans don’t suit your current usage patterns, then you might be well-advised to take a look at the alternatives if you really are determined to literally be the ‘producer on the street’…
