When Music Leaves You Cold

It’s very difficult to predict how people will respond to a given piece of music; everyone values music in a slightly different way, and at the heart of our musical taste is a largely undefinable emotional barometer. However, I suspect that a live performance by Terje Isungset, a Norwegian artist who plays instruments carved from pure ice, would send a shiver down anyone’s spine…

In The Hall Of The Ice King

Terje creates his instruments by scupting them from top quality ice that is free from air bubbles; he has already hewn an Iceofon, Ice Harp, Ice Horn, Ice trumpet, Ice percussion and an Ice bass drum.

Terje’s record label is, appropriately enough, called AIR – All Ice Records. The label is dedicated to releasing works that are played on instruments made of ice, and aims to release at least one new album per year, with the release occurring on the first full moon of the year.

Peter Wasilewski is a visual artist who also uses ice as his primary medium of expression; his colourful work is full of fractals and diffraction, so it seems only natural that he and Terje should get together to create an “ice music video”…
